Abstract
The dissertation describes patterns of inequality in the cognitive development of a sample of children enrolled in public and private schools in the first year of preschool — the initial period of compulsory schooling. It uses longitudinal data to estimate the effect of school sector on learning, while controlling for family socioeconomic characteristics.
